Pressure and bed sores
The primary cause of pressure and bed sores (otherwise known of pressure ulcers) is pressure against the skin, for example from a bed. Some pressure and bed sores can happen when there is one prolonged period of pressure against an area of skin or when an area of body is subject to repeated periods of pressure. Pressure and bed sores are a particular problem for those confined to a bed or a chair and are unable to move without assistance from others.
Pressure and bed sores are usually avoidable and can be avoided by regularly turned. There are guidelines which provide that any patient with a presssure or bed sore should receive an initial and ongoing pressure ulcer assessment and should have access for pressure relieving support services.
